‘No reason why’ she bought lottery ticket, SC woman says after winning 6-digit jackpot

Buying a lottery ticket was a spontaneous decision, said a Midlands woman who went on to win a six-figure jackpot because of her off-the-cuff choice, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

“No reason why,” the woman said in a news release. “I thought while I’m here getting gas, I’ll get a ticket too.”

The decision to buy Palmetto Cash 5 game at a gas station/convenience store last month turned into a $200,000 prize, according to the release.

The winning numbers — 4, 16, 26, 27, 33, and Power-Up: 2 — were drawn on Aug. 28.

The winning ticket was sold for $2 at the S M Mart in the Mobil gas station at 840 U.S. 1 in Lugoff. That’s in an area of Kershaw County near the Wateree River that’s densely packed with restaurants and retail businesses.

Because the woman bought the Powered-Up option for an additional dollar, it doubled the prize to $200,000, according to the release.

The woman’s name has not been released because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The woman didn’t specify how she plans to spend the windfall, but said getting the newfound fortune is very timely.

“It came at an awesome time,” the winner said. “It’s so exciting.”

The odds of winning $200,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 878,399-to-1, according to the release.

S M Mart received a commission of $2,000 for selling the winning ticket, lottery officials said.
