After discovering he had won a seven-digit jackpot on a lottery ticket, a Midlands man called his wife, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release.

“Do you love me?” he asked, according to the release.

“Yes,” she answered.

“I just scratched off a lottery ticket for $1 million,” he confided.

His wife could tell by his voice and breathing that he was telling the truth.

The man said he was on his way home from work when he paid $10 to buy what turned out to be a winning scratch-off game at a Gate Petroleum Co. gas station/convenience store, according to the release. That’s at 2202 W. Dekalb St. in Camden, in the area between the Wateree River and Broad Street.

There was no word if he plans on going back to work after buying what lottery officials called the “life changing winning ticket.”

The winner did not reveal any plans for the newfound windfall. All he said was, “I’m blessed.”

The man’s name has not been made public because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The odds of winning the top prize in the $1,000,000 Bonus Multiplier game are 1-in-1,440,000, according to the release. One of the game’s four top prizes remains unclaimed, officials said.

The convenience store received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed winning ticket, according to the release.
