Someone else got the grand prize, but tickets sold in SC won Powerball jackpots
The second largest Powerball grand prize in the game’s history was captured Wednesday night by someone who bought a ticket in California.
But five ticket buyers in the Palmetto State came extremely close to capturing the $1.7 billion payday, purchasing games that turned out to be one number shy of winning the grand prize, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said Thursday in a news release.
While the Powerball players who bought tickets in all corners of South Carolina didn’t hit the ultimate jackpot, they will be rewarded with $50,000 consolation prizes, according to the release.
Now the search is on for the ticket buyers.
The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and Powerball: 10.
Check your numbers if you bought a ticket at:
▪ High Falls Express in West Union
▪ AAVS LLC in Gaffney
▪ Value Spot in Greenwood
▪ Grab & Go in Myrtle Beach
▪ QuikTrip in Indian Land
In all five cases, the tickets matched four of the five white numbers and the red Powerball number, lottery officials said.
The odds of matching four white balls and the red Powerball for the prize are 1-in-913,129, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery website.
The odds of winning the grand prize jackpot are 1-in-293 million.
The winners have 180 days to claim the prize, according to lottery officials.
The winners will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
“Sign the back of your ticket and put it in a safe location until you’re ready to come forward to claim the prize,” lottery officials said.

The stores that sold the tickets each will receive $500 commission when the winning tickets are claimed and turned in to lottery officials, according to the release.
Powerball will draw again on Saturday night when the grand prize will reset to $20 million.
