SC couple ended workday scratching lottery tickets. Now they may retire after big jackpot
An Aiken County woman didn’t believe it when her husband told her that he’d uncovered a scratch-off lottery game’s grand prize, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.
But it was no joke, the North Augusta couple had just won a $300,000 jackpot, officials said in a news release.
“My husband is always pulling my leg,” the wife said in the release. “When he showed me the ticket, I thought he was joking.”
She had a hard time recounting her emotions when she realized they really had won the Wild Cash Multiplier Extra Play game’s grand prize.
“There are not enough words to describe how it felt to win,” she said.
The six-figure winning lottery game was purchased at the Circle K gas station/convenience store at 1014 Edgefield Road, according to the release. That’s near Exit 5 on Interstate 20.
The couple, who occasionally buy tickets on the way home from work, picked out what turned out to be the winning game for $10, officials said. It was after work when the husband made the discovery and had to insist it was no gag to his wife, according to the release.
Now the question is will the couple return to work, as officials said the couple told them they’re contemplating retirement with their newfound windfall.
While the couple didn’t release any other plans for spending their prize, the wife said she intends to continue being thrifty despite hitting the $300,000 jackpot.
“I’m still clipping coupons,” the woman said.
The winners will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
After this win, one of the Wild Cash Multiplier Extra Play game’s six top prizes remains unclaimed, officials said.
The odds of winning the six-figure top prize in the game were 1-in-740,000, according to the release.
The Circle K received a commission of $3,000 for selling the claimed ticket, officials said.
