SC man ‘blessed’ to win Powerball jackpot. Here’s what he did with lottery prize
“I felt really, really blessed,” a Midlands man recently told South Carolina Education Lottery officials after he won a six-figure Powerball prize.
The man used part of his winnings — a $100,000 jackpot — to pay forward the blessing with a donation to a local church, officials said in a news release.
The name of the church and the amount donated was not available, but the man bought his winning Powerball ticket earlier this month in Kershaw County, according to the release.
The $100,000 winning ticket was purchased at the Corner Pantry gas station/convenience store at 344 Sumter Highway in Camden, officials said.
The winner said it was bedtime when he checked his ticket and realized all but one of the numbers matched, according to the release. The man said he went to sleep, but first thing the next morning he checked the ticket again and confirmed his big win, officials said.
“It was outstanding,” he said.
The winning numbers in the July 12 drawing were 8, 16, 24, 33, 54 and Powerball: 18.
Because he purchased the Power Play option for an additional dollar, his initial $50,000 prize was doubled when the Power Play number was revealed to be 2, officials said.
The odds of matching four white ball numbers and the red Powerball number were 1-in-913,129, according to the release.
The man didn’t reveal any other plans for spending the rest of his newfound windfall.
The winner is allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
For selling the claimed ticket, the Corner Pantry in Camden received a commission of $1,000, according to the release.
The jackpot for Monday’s Powerball drawing is $364 million, according to the game’s website.
Anyone looking to buy a ticket must make a purchase by 9:59 p.m. Monday for the 10:59 p.m. drawing. Tickets are $2, and could cost more with additional options.
The odds of winning Powerball’s grand prize are 1-in-293 million.
