Piggly Wiggly shopper got wrong SC lottery ticket, but it won game’s grand prize

A Midlands woman got a different scratch-off ticket than the one she asked for during a recent shopping trip at a Piggly Wiggly supermarket, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.

It turned out that she couldn’t be happier that the employee at the store in Columbia made a mistake, because it resulted in her winning the other game’s $500,000 grand prize, officials said Thursday in a news release.

Although she pointed at a different game, the winner wound up spending $10 to buy a Feeling Lucky? scratch-off lottery ticket at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store at 6325 North Main St. That’s near Exit 71 on I-20.

“I just kept it,” the winner said in the release. “It was a blessing that has changed my life.”

Information about how the winner plans to spend her newfound windfall was not available.

The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The winner overcame 1,500,000-to-1 odds to win the Feeling Lucky? game, according to the release. Two of the game’s top prizes remains unclaimed, officials said.

The Piggly Wiggly in Columbia received a commission of $5,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
