A customer at a Taco Bell in Winter Haven, Florida, got very lucky over the weekend.
He was sitting at a table and eating his food around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he decided he needed more seasoning for his meal, according to a Facebook post from the Winter Haven Police Department,.
Within seconds of him getting up from his seat to get some hot sauce, a car crashed through the restaurant.
Behind the wheel was Emmanuel Akowuah of New York, who had parked right in front of the fast food spot. The 77-year-old told cops that he thought he was putting the car in reverse, but accidentally put it into drive.
“The vehicle jumped the curb and went into the building coming to a rest approximately ten feet inside of the building,” according to a police statement.
Neither Akowuah or his wife, who was in the passenger seat, was injured.
“The car caused significant damage to the building, but authorities do not have an estimate on how much it will cost to repair the restaurant.”
Miraculously, the customer was sitting in the exact spot of the impact, and he got up at the right time.
Winter Haven police spokeswoman Jamie Brown said it’s fortunate that no one was even injured in the crash.
“This was a serious crash: the airbags deployed and the building kind of caved in,” she said. “The occupants could have been injured and the man who got up to get more hot sauce could have sustained a devastating injury, or even death.”
He was the only one sitting in the area of the crash.
“He should play the lottery,” she said.
Many commenters on the post agreed.
“I’m so glad no one was injured. I want to know what the man’s extra sauce packet said though! ‘Today is your lucky day’?”
“Saved by the sauce,” wrote another.
“Thank God for hot sauce!” said another posted.
