Couple lost wedding ring 30 years ago. It was right under their feet in Alabama home
A couple’s wedding ring vanished three decades ago — but it had been right under their feet in Alabama.
Bill and Betty Green recently were reunited with the long-lost ring after it was found underneath the basement carpet at their old house, the Lake Homes Realty firm said in a news release.
It was a special moment for the Greens, now ages 93 and 92. The couple couldn’t afford wedding bands when they got married in 1951 but eventually bought them for each other, officials said.
Then as they were building a house on Lewis Smith Lake in the 1990s, Bill Green lost his diamond ring. It was still missing when they contacted associate broker Justin Dyar and sold their home in December 2021.
When the new owners started renovations, they made a sparkly discovery in the basement. They found the husband’s ring under the flooring and reached out to reunite the couple with their “priceless heirloom,” officials said.
“The Buyers’ agent texted me a photo of the ring and stated the new owners had found it under the basement carpet,” Dyar told McClatchy News in an email. “I sent that photo (to) .... the Sellers’ daughter. She called in literally 10 seconds and was ecstatic that it was her Father’s wedding ring.”
Dyar said the couple valued the gesture from the people now living in the home.
“His new ring had been lost for over 30 years,” Lake Homes Realty said in its news release. “It has now been returned to the Greens and they can enjoy this special piece that has been gone for so long.”
Lewis Smith Lake has a shoreline that stretches about 500 miles, offering activities ranging from swimming to fishing, according to the short-term rental company Airbnb. The body of water is roughly 50 miles northwest of Birmingham.
