A man was driving on a Utah highway when he struck a cow, officials said.

The driver struck the animal around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, on State Route 102 at mile 14, the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

A photo of the car shows the windshield smashed and the hood of the vehicle damaged.

Authorities said they had to extract the man from the car.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He was then flown to a trauma center in Wasatch Front, officials said.

The cow died.

Utah Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash and how the cow got on the freeway.
