Sister tries to save man who disappeared while swimming in Georgia river, officials say

Crews are searching for a swimmer who disappeared in a Georgia river, officials said.
The 27-year-old was swimming across the Chattahoochee River to a popular diving rock around 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, when he started going under water, officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources told McClatchy News in an email on Sunday, June 26.
His sister tried to save him but had trouble staying above water and had to “break contact,” officials said.
First responders with the Cobb County Fire Department responded to the river, where witnesses showed them where the man was last seen, officials said. Game wardens then searched the area into Friday night.
They resumed the search the morning of Saturday, June 25, using SONAR.
The Chattahoochee River flows 430 miles from “a tiny stream in north Georgia” to the Apalachicola Bay off Florida, according to Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. It’s the “most heavily used water resource” in the state and offers activities such as fishing, paddling and boating.
