Tourist dies after he’s found unresponsive in water near Hawaii hotel, police say

An Oregon man died on vacation in Hawaii after he was found unresponsive in the water, police said.

John Mackenzie, a 61-year-old from Terrebonne, was found unresponsive in the water near the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel at Kaunaoa Bay on Sunday, July 10, the Hawaii Police Department said.

Lifeguards rushed to pull Mackenzie from the water and began giving him CPR. He was taken to a community hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police and a coroner are investigating the cause of death, according to the police department. The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel did not respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment.

In June, a 45-year-old man from Diamond Bar, California, died in an apparent drowning after snorkeling on his vacation in Hawaii, McClatchy News reported.

First responders found the man dead on rocks after bystanders called for help. Officials told news outlets a swell and high tide made ocean conditions rough at the time.
