A man died when he fell 200-feet off-trail from the rim of the Grand Canyon, the National Park Service reported.

Visitors reported a 44-year-old man had fallen west of the Bright Angel Point Trail on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, rangers said in a news release.

Rangers found his body 200 feet below the rim, where had fallen while hiking off-trail, the release said. An investigation into his death continues.

The National Park Service did not release the man’s name.

About 12 people die at the Grand Canyon each year on average, Outside reported.

Rangers advise visitors to stay on designated trails, keep at least six feet away from the edge of the rim, not to climb over fences or barriers and watch for tripping hazards.

Visitors also should not run, jump or perform physical stunts near the rim, rangers say.
