Co-workers spent years splitting Maryland lottery tickets. They finally won
The camaraderie among co-workers is a unique bond. For six Maryland employees, this bond revolves around the lottery.
After years of playing together, the “Powerball Six” won $50,000 in the Oct. 17 Powerball drawing, according to an Oct. 26 news release from Maryland lottery officials.
The “Powerball Six” is a group of workers ages 33 to 66 from Baldwin, Baltimore, Forest Hill, Laurel and Reisterstown. In the past, the group has won smaller prizes that they have reinvested into more tickets. This is the biggest prize they have won.
“We finally got lucky,” one member told officials.
The group has a designated ticket buyer, a 61-year-old Laurel resident. He bought the lucky ticket at Lee’s Market in Laurel, about 20 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. Another member picked the winning Powerball number, 25, officials said.
When the ticket buyer learned of the group’s big win, he immediately texted their group chat, he told officials.
“I almost had a heart attack,” one member said of receiving the text.
Another member of the group thought the text was “probably spam” at first, she said.
Each group member has their own plans for their winnings, according to officials. One plans to share their winnings with family members, some plan to save their winnings, some are planning home improvements, and some are organizing a spa day for friends.
