Couple switched up their Powerball routine and won big in drawing in Maryland
A Maryland couple has a lottery-playing routine: when the Powerball jackpot gets big enough, the wife goes out and buys a ticket.
But ahead of the historic Nov. 2 Powerball drawing with a top prize of around $2.04 billion, the North Potomac couple had to switch things up when the wife didn’t have time to grab tickets, the husband told Maryland lottery officials, according to a Nov. 14 news release.
“My wife was supposed to buy the tickets, but didn’t get around to it so I wound up picking them up at Steve’s Deli instead,” the 70-year-old told officials.
The night of the drawing, the man opted for Quick Pick tickets with the Power Play multiplier, officials said. By the time the winning numbers were called, he was tired, but took a quick glance at his tickets. Without paying much attention, he went to sleep.
The next morning, he took a closer look at his numbers, and that’s when he saw it: four matching numbers plus the Power Ball number.
“I showed my wife the ticket, the winning numbers and the rules of the game,” he told officials. “She took a look and said, ‘we won $50,000’. I showed her that I had paid the extra dollar for the Power Play option, so multiply that $50,000 by two!”
The couple had won a third-tier $100,000 prize. While the couple — they’ve been married for 30 years — doesn’t have exact plans for their winnings yet, they told officials that they hope to plan a trip.
North Potomac is about 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.
