‘Lap dog’ runs from parking lot into ocean — then swims to sea, California rescuers say
A lifeguard rescued a dog after it ran into the ocean and swam to sea, California officials said.
Just before running into the ocean, the dog darted loose in the Junipero Beach Lot in Long Beach at about 6 p.m. on March 11, prompting calls to lifeguards, the city’s fire department said in a Facebook post.
With a rescue board and bouy in hand, a lifeguard headed out to rescue the “small white lap dog,” the fire department said.
The dog made it to the swim line, firefighters said, and the lifeguard was able to get the dog on the board and “bring it safely to shore.”
The fire department said it could not initially find the dog’s owner, and animal control took over caring for it.
The dog, however, has since been reunited with its owner, the fire department said in a Sunday, March 12, comment.
