A wellness check led to a grim discovery inside a Georgia home, according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.

The bodies of two people were found Monday, March 13, at the house in Augusta, Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed to McClatchy News. He described the deaths as “suspicious.”

A landlord called for a wellness check after the people living at the property missed their rent payment for the month, The Augusta Press and WSB-TV reported, citing Bowen. Officials didn’t confirm if the bodies found were of the tenants who lived there.

The remains weren’t identified and will undergo an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Bowen said.

“They had been dead for a while,” he told The Augusta Press, adding that it had likely been weeks before the bodies were discovered.

Authorities didn’t release additional information.

Bowen’s office is also investigating an unrelated case after a 51-year-old woman was discovered dead in her home on March 13.

Augusta is about 145 miles east of Atlanta.
