A lucky lottery player’s strategy finally paid off when he scored a big prize in Maryland.

The 66-year-old government worker played his five-digit account number for months until he scored $50,000, the Maryland Lottery said in an Oct. 4 news release.

He won thousands from a Pick 5 game on Sept. 24 and was “all smiles,” according to the release, which did not use the man’s name.

“If I would have switched my numbers, I would not have won. You have to play those numbers for every drawing,” he told the lottery office.

In addition to using the same numbers, the man said he also went to the same store to purchase the lottery game.

“I am not sure if it is a superstition or maybe I like it there because I feel comfortable with the employees,” he said.

Now, he has plans to buy a car for someone in his family.

“I guess I am going to have to treat my daughter,” he also told lottery officials.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
