A “heartbroken” family surrendered their senior dog — and now, she needs another new home.

“This was not an easy decision and we support our adopters if they decide it isn’t a good fit,” a South Carolina animal shelter wrote Aug. 11 on Facebook. “We ultimately want what’s best for all parties. We will welcome Blanche back with open arms and continue to work tirelessly to find the right fit for her.”

The Greenville Humane Society said 12-year-old Blanche, a retriever mix, returned to the shelter after she was first found wandering in a yard. The shelter believes she was dumped on a street and never reclaimed, according social media posts and details a spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.

“She was alone,” the shelter wrote. “Everything she had known was now gone. And she needed our help. There was no question — we took her.”

Blanche recently was adopted, but the situation didn’t work out. She became “incredibly stressed” and “overwhelmed” in her new home, so her owners made the difficult decision to surrender her.

Blanche’s latest family has three other dogs, and she will need no more than two older pups in her next home. She’s described as a “sweet” senior dog who “deserves to live her final days in a loving home.”

“She’s losing her vision,” the shelter wrote. “Possibly her hearing, too. Her legs are giving out from hip dysplasia. We suspect she’s suffering from kidney disease. Poor, poor girl.”

Blanche also is known as a dog who loves lounging in the sun and can’t get enough meatballs.

As of Aug. 12, the shelter said the mixed-breed pup was still available for adoption. More details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at greenvillehumane.com.

“In her old age, she needs stability — calmness — love,” the shelter wrote. “Please help us give her another chance at forever.”
