Wendy’s throws shade at McDonald’s broken ice cream machines with $1 Frosty offer
In an icy dig, Wendy’s is offering customers a sweet “fix” to rival McDonald’s broken ice cream machines.
Classic Frosty desserts are just a $1 at participating Wendy’s locations nationwide, for a limited time, according to the Ohio-based burger chain.
The offer is good through Sept. 30 and no additional purchase is necessary.
“The craving for a sweet treat can strike at any time, but if fans are planning to order from the other guys they might want to avoid lunch or snack time ... or really anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when machines are most often unavailable,” Wendy’s said, citing McBroken.com data.
McClatchy News reached out to McDonald’s for comment Sept. 26 and was awaiting a response.
The website shows the status of every McDonald’s ice cream machine across the U.S., using a red or green dot to indicate if a restaurant’s machine is up and running or not. Rashiq Zahid, a software engineer, came up with the idea after a failed attempt to order a McSundae in Berlin.
“I was like, this would be pretty interesting for Germany, but it would be amazing for the US, which is basically the capital of McDonald’s,” Zahid told The Verge in 2020.
Now, customers can also use the tool to find a Wendy’s and grab a discounted Frosty, available in chocolate or vanilla.
Wendy’s recently ditched its seasonal triple berry Frosty for the classic vanilla flavor, but teased the possibility of new limited-time flavors.
