Morning routine leads NC man to a huge lottery win. ‘It woke me up for sure’
A man was drinking his morning coffee when a winning lottery ticket gave him an even bigger jolt.
“It woke me up for sure,” $100,000-prize-winner Dennis Pitt told the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Pitt hit the jackpot after going through his usual routine. Each Monday, he makes an early stop to buy coffee and a scratch-off ticket.
This time, his ticket from the Eagles Express convenience store in the Raleigh suburb of Knightdale was a winner. He spent $20 to try his luck on the Win Big game, lottery officials wrote in an Oct. 22 news release.
Pitt was drinking his coffee when he learned the scratch-off was going to make him richer.
“I just sat there looking at it,” the winner, a Zebulon resident, told lottery officials. “Then I called my wife.”
Pitt claimed the first $100,000 prize in the Win Big game, which launched in October. Pitt, who enjoys buying new tickets, kept $71,506 after taxes.
It’s not the first time a lottery player’s routine has led to a windfall. In South Carolina, a man’s longtime tradition of buying a lottery ticket each morning paid off, McClatchy News reported in 2023.
