About a year ago, one Maryland lottery player decided to make some major life changes. Now, it’s paid off with a jackpot prize, lottery officials said.

The man, who chose to go by Mr. Money Monk to remain anonymous, told the Maryland Lottery he started focusing on his health and fitness and increasing his lottery playing in 2023.

At that time, he also predicted if he were to win a big lottery prize, this would be the year, he told lottery officials.

According to an Oct. 23 news release, Mr. Money Monk claimed his biggest winnings yet — a $68,281 jackpot prize from a Fast Play Slingo ticket he bought for $3. Previously, his biggest prize had been free chicken for a year from a chain restaurant, he said.

Mr. Money Monk bought his winning ticket at a Wegmans in Columbia, about a 20-mile drive southwest from Baltimore. The retailer also claimed a $682 prize for selling the ticket, officials said.

The lucky player wore a black costume monk’s robe for his photo, telling lottery officials the outfit represents his “monk-like focus and dedication to overcoming adversity.”

For Mr. Money Monk, the win represents more than just a change to his finances. It’s symbolic of the work he’s put toward healing after his dog died in 2019 and he went into a deep depression, he said.

He told officials he plans to put the money into savings and make some investments.

Eleven progressive jackpot prizes remain to be claimed in the Slingo game, and the odds of winning are 1 in 3.34, according to the lottery.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.
