‘Incredible’ sea creature jumps and wows onlookers off California. See ‘lucky’ moment
A massive sea creature was spotted off the California coast, and viewers are calling it a “lucky” moment.
On March 29, the viewers got the chance to see an “absolutely incredible” sight when a humpback whale jumped through the air, according to a March 31 Facebook post by the Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
The young whale “breached at least 25 times in a row” before showing the tourists chin slaps and even some fin slaps, watchers said.
Humpback whales reach sexual maturity between the ages of 4 and 10 years old, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Calves stay near their mom for up to a year before weaning, with the mother being “protective” and “swimming closely and often touching them with their flippers,” according to the NOAA.
The same day the young whale put on a show, tourists saw dozens of humpbacks and hundreds of dolphins on their outings, the whale watch group said.
Monterey is about a 120-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
