A routine stop at a Florida convenience store changed someone’s life.

Lottery officials say a Florida Lotto ticket purchased at one of the state’s popular beach destinations is worth a whopping $8.75 million.

The drawing was Wednesday, May 7, and the numbers were 1-8-12-24-33-47.

It was purchased by a customer at the J and J Food Store on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach, which is about a 20-mile drive southeast from downtown Jacksonville.

The odds of getting all six numbers right in the game are 1 in 22,957,480.

The winner has 180 days to claim the cash. Prizes of $1 million or more must be claimed in person at a lottery office, officials say.

Winners are given a choice of getting a reduced prize in a lump sum or getting a larger percentage of the money by having it divided into 30 annual installments, lottery officials say. “The cash option amount varies by game and value of the prize,” lottery officials say.

A basic ticket in Florida Lotto is $2 and players select six numbers from 1 through 53 in hopes of matching those numbers in the drawing. Players can also have the game randomly pick six numbers for them.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
