A blind dog found dodging traffic “didn’t stand a chance” — then came a heartwarming rescue in North Carolina.

Teddy the shih tzu made it to safety, and now he needs a new home.

“Despite everything, his heart is wide open,” the Humane Society of Catawba County wrote May 7 in a Facebook post. “He’s playful, sweet, and just wants to be near someone who cares.”

Teddy waits for a fresh start after he landed at the shelter in late April. He had been spotted roaming a busy street in Newton, Kaitlyn Ewing, director of intake, rescue and foster coordination, told McClatchy News via email.

“Found blindly wandering in traffic, matted and scared, Teddy was brought to us by a kind stranger who knew he didn’t stand a chance out there alone,” the shelter wrote. “He’s just 2 years old, but has already lived through more pain than a dog should ever know.”

Teddy is described as “gentle,” trusting and friendly. The humane society believes he may have been born blind.

“A genetic deformity left him with non-functioning, abnormal eyes that now need to be surgically removed to prevent ongoing pain and infection,” the shelter wrote. “On top of that, Teddy is also heartworm positive.”

As of May 8, Teddy is available to go into foster care or “foster with intention to adopt” — which means someone could keep him on a permanent basis after he finishes treatment.

“Teddy is one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet, and the lack of sight doesn’t prevent him one bit from giving you love,” Ewing wrote. “He’s always excited to be around people and meet new friends.”

The shelter is in the Newton area, a roughly 40-mile drive northwest from Charlotte. Details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at catawbahumane.org.
