A woman spent $5 on a lottery ticket in Maryland, then won a prize that left her stunned.

She was shopping with her sister when they stopped at Tony’s Liquor in Laurel, the Maryland Lottery said in a May 7 news release.

The woman bought some lottery tickets, including a “Let’s Make a Deal” scratch-off.

Then she scratched the ticket.

“I saw that I matched the ‘8’ to one of the winning numbers and thought, ‘This can’t be real,’” she told the lottery office.

So she handed the ticket to her sister to check, lottery officials said.

The woman then scanned the ticket using her lottery app, and it confirmed she was a $50,000 top prize winner.

She told lottery officials she wants to use her prize money on home improvements.

Laurel is about a 20-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
