‘Problematic neighbor’ kills man cutting his grass in Ohio, officials say
Police are investigating after they said a man was killed while cutting grass in an Ohio neighborhood, news outlets report.
On May 14, Cleveland police were called to a West Park neighborhood around 1:30 p.m., WOIO reported. When they arrived, they said they found a man dead in the street.
“Unfortunately, I saw my friend lying in the street and a cover over him, so I realized that he’s gone and we just worked together yesterday down at the arena,” Russell Digney told WJW with tears in his eyes.
The 68-year-old man had been cutting his grass when someone described by Cleveland administrators as a “problematic neighbor” shot him, authorities said, WKYC reported.
“He didn’t like him cutting his grass, so he drove by, shot him and killed him,” the victim’s friend, Vic Evin, told WJW.
Police began looking for the suspected shooter and found his vehicle minutes away, according to WOIO. The man took his own life and was found inside the car, according to police, the outlet reported.
McClatchy News reached out to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner to confirm the suspect’s name but did not immediately hear back.
“I visited and spoke with neighbors, who are understandably shocked and distraught. A neighbor asked for a priest to be contacted in light of the victim’s faith; Father Ramser from OLA came and offered a prayer for him,” Councilman Charles Slife wrote on Facebook.
A memorial honoring the victim was set up in his yard, WJW reported.
