Dan Cox says Biden ‘probably' won 2020 election in radio interview
Dan Cox, the Republican nominee for Maryland governor, stopped short of clearly saying President Joe Biden won the 2020 election during a Thursday interview on WBAL news radio.
When asked whether then-President Donald Trump won, Cox said he called Biden after the election "because he was the president" and that he did not have concerns about Trump losing.
"I am not an expert on elections, and I've gotten pegged with saying I'm a denier," Cox said. "I'm actually a supporter of the data."
But when asked later, specifically, if Biden won the election, Cox said, "I think he probably did. He was certified to be the winner. But again, I don't know what the DOJ is saying." Biden's victory was certified by every state, including battleground states, and federal courts rejected numerous legal challenges to the election results.
Cox's comments come as he seeks to distance himself from his 2022 gubernatorial campaign. The GOP nominee told The Baltimore Sun last week that he's running on affordability and that voters should consider his 2026 positions. During his 2022 campaign, Cox forcefully denied Biden's win. He also attended the rally - and arranged buses for others to attend - that preceded the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, where rioters attempted to disrupt the congressional election certification process.
Maryland Democrats criticized Cox's stance.
"It's no surprise that MAGA Dan Cox continues his long-standing history of spreading conspiracies about our fair and free elections," Maryland Democratic Party Chairman Steaurt Pittman said in a statement Thursday. "Dan Cox is still too extreme for Maryland, and in November voters will send him packing once again."
Cox did not respond to a request for comment by the print publication deadline.
Reacting to Cox's remarks, leaders in the Maryland Republican Party, who last month said Cox could win the governorship if he squares his message on affordability, repeated the sentiment.
"I don't think Maryland voters are focused on relitigating the 2020 presidential election," Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey said in a text to The Baltimore Sun. "This election is about the future of Maryland and whether families are better off today under Governor Wes Moore than they were four years ago."
In a statement to The Sun, Maryland Republican Party Chair Nicole Beus Harris said that "Dan Cox and the Republican ticket are focused on Maryland and solving Maryland's problems." She added that Biden's election was certified.
