Sorority activities at Duke suspended after hospitalization

DURHAM, N.C. – Sorority activities at Duke University have been halted after a new member’s alcohol-related hospitalization.

Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president for student affairs, released a statement Wednesday saying all sorority activity was suspended after the hospitalization and other concerns about the recruitment process known as rush.

Moneta said the student is expected to recover fully.

A university website says most of Duke’s 18 sororities hold their formal recruitment process in January, when prospective members visit chapters and then receive bids to join. The website listed last Sunday as “Bid Day.”

Duke has suspended all sorority activity until further notice.

WTVD reports (http://goo.gl/FN5iwc ) that an email to sororities signed by a school official says the new sorority member was hospitalized in critical condition overnight.

Duke didn’t say which sorority the student joined.
