1 dead, 1 injured after jumping off interstate bridges in Charlotte

One person died and another one has potentially life-threatening injuries after jumping from bridges onto interstates Wednesday morning.

The person who died jumped onto Interstate 77 southbound from a bridge on W.T. Harris Boulevard.

The person jumped off the bridge shortly after 9 a.m. and was hit by a vehicle, Medic reported.

At 10:30 a.m., the second person jumped from North Tryon Street onto I-485 Outer Loop, police said.

Medic initially reported the person had died but later corrected that to say the person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A 911 caller said a person had fallen from the bridge on North Tryon, but a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigation concluded the 58-year-old man intentionally jumped from the structure.

The man landed in a run-off safety lane of I-485, not in the travel lanes, police said. No vehicle hit him, and he was alert and conscious when police found him.

Police are withholding the man’s name until his family is notified. CMPD said in a statement that the department is working with Cabarrus County law enforcement on the investigation.

Two inner lanes of the I-485 outer loop were closed for about 45 minutes but are now open for traffic, police said shortly after noon.

Police have released no information about the person who died after jumping off W.T. Harris Boulevard.
