The Midlands celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.

KING DAY AT THE DOME 2015: This year’s theme is “Demanding Justice, Standing for Dignity.” Prayer service, 8:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, 801 Washington St., led by Bishop Dennis V. Proctor, presiding bishop of the Alabama-Florida Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church. Following the service, participants will line up for the march to the State House.

Early arrivals at the State House will be entertained by live performers and recordings of Dr. King beginning at 9:15 a.m.

The rally will begin at 10:15 a.m.; speakers will include S.C. Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth; the Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina State Conference, NAACP; and Joseph Gibbons, chairman of the Energy Equity Alliance. Additional guests will include Bernadette Hampton, president of the S.C. Education Association; Joyce M. Durant, grand worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation; the Rev. Brenda Kneece, executive minister, S.C. Christian Action Council; the Rev. James Blassingame, president of the S.C. Baptist Education and Missionary Convention; Lewis Nelson, grand master, Prince Hall Grand Lodge; Thomas Pope, president, S.C. NAACP Youth and College Division; and Sean Seibels, grand master, Palmetto Grand Lodge. Information at (803) 754-4584

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. COMMEMORATION: 11 a.m. Monday in Antisdel Chapel on the Benedict College campus. Guest speaker will be State Rep. Bakari Sellers. The event is free and open to the public.

NAACP ANNUAL PRAYER SERVICE: 4 p.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, 801 Washington St All visitors are welcome.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATION: 4 p.m. Monday at the MLK Park and Community Center, 2300 Greene St. Keynote speaker will be Columbia Urban League President and CEO James T. McLawhorn Jr. The celebration will feature performances from the A.C. Flora High School Gospel Ensemble, The Brotherhood of First Nazareth Baptist Church and Jonathan Cannon, a Dutch Fork High School junior. A 3:06 p.m. wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. historic marker, Harden and Greene streets.
