Senators send anti-human trafficking law to Haley’s desk

Legislation to allow South Carolina’s State Grand Jury to investigate human trafficking is heading to Gov. Nikki Haley for final approval.

The Senate voted Tuesday to give final legislative approval to the bill that Attorney General Alan Wilson considered a top legislative priority. It received unanimous support in both chambers.

Wilson’s office oversees the State Grand Jury. He says the measure would give prosecutors and local law enforcement a new weapon against modern day slavery. The ability to send cases to the State Grand Jury means they’re no longer restricted by local jurisdictional boundaries.

The state’s chief prosecutor says the bill would fix an oversight in the state’s 2012 anti-human trafficking law. Wilson says the fix would mean human traffickers could no longer hide by scurrying from county to county.

Former U.N. ambassador set to attend S.C. forum

An upcoming S.C. gathering that features several potential Republican presidential contenders has added another name to the guest list, organizers said.

Organizers of the summit, organized by Citizens United and U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, R.S.C., said former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton will appear at the meeting, set for May 9 in Greenville.

Appointed by President George W. Bush, Bolton was U.N. ambassador from 2005 to 2006. He also was a foreign policy adviser to Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Bolton joins other speakers already announced, among them many Republicans mentioned as potential 2016 presidential contenders. They include former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

Organizers advertise the event as a forum that’s free to the public where the “principles of pro-growth economics, social conservatism, and a strong national defense” will be discussed. Similar events have been held in Iowa and New Hampshire, two other early voting states.
