Another Richland state senator is endorsing Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris has the official support of another S.C. legislator.

State Sen. John Scott, D-Richland, is endorsing Harris, the campaign announced Friday.

Scott has represented the northwestern portion of Richland County in the state Senate since 2009. Before that, he served nine terms in the state House of Representatives.

He’s the second Columbia lawmaker to endorse Harris, after Sen. Darrell Jackson. Scott also joins Florence attorney Marguerite Willis in the Harris camp. Scott was Willis’ running mate when she ran for governor in 2018.

In a statement, Scott said he was influenced by Harris’ stated support for historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs. In an education roundtable in Columbia this week, Harris said she wants to boost funding for education courses at HBCUs in hopes of producing more teachers of color.

“On each visit to our state, she has stressed the importance of investing in our institutions of higher learning with a focus on the positive impact HBCUs have in Black communities,” he said. “She has also repeatedly visited oft-ignored rural areas and outlined her vision for economic development while speaking to local concerns like hospital closure and failing water infrastructure.”

Harris has previous S.C. endorsements from state Reps. Pat Henegan, D-Marlboro, and JA Moore, D-Berkeley; and former Reps. Bakari Sellers and I.S. Leevy Johnson.
