US Rep. Joe Wilson wins Republican primary for 2nd Congressional District

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson easily held off his one primary challenger in South Carolina’s Republican primary Tuesday, setting him up for his November contest against Democratic challenger Adair Ford Boroughs.

The Associated Press declared Wilson, R-Springdale, the winner against Springdale Mayor Michael Bishop at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Wednesday morning with 100% of precincts reporting, Wilson held a commanding win over Bishop, besting him by nearly 50 percentage points.

Wilson has represented the 2nd Congressional District, which stretches from Aiken to Richland counties, since 2001.

He previously served in the South Carolina Senate for 17 years.

Much of Wilson’s campaign was focused on the federal response to COVID-19, job creation and national security. In a questionnaire from The State, the congressman pushed for more local control when it comes to responding to the virus, adding that he trusted S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster’s response.

Wilson will face Boroughs in November.

Boroughs, a former public school teacher and attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, has won the endorsements of popular South Carolina Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn and Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
