‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ Tucker Carlson asks SC’s Graham over Jan. 6 remarks
Fox News host Tucker Carlson is angry about U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s comments that rioters who overran the U.S. Capitol should be shot.
Carlson excoriated South Carolina’s senior senator on his program Monday night, after the Washington Post reported that Graham told Capitol police to use their guns during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
“Shoot American citizens for the crime of trespassing? Really? This is the conservative position?” Carlson asked with a photo of an angry-looking Graham, R-Seneca, next to him on the screen. “Look, they shouldn’t have been there. We never defended that and never would. But kill them? What the hell is wrong with you, Lindsey Graham?”
This week’s segment was part of the blowback to a story over the weekend that quoted Graham as urging the use of deadly force as angry Donald Trump supporters overran the Capitol building during a ceremonial meeting to confirm President Joe Biden’s election.
“What are you doing?” Graham said to the Senate sergeant-at-arms as senators were being evacuated from the chamber. “Take back the Senate! You’ve got guns. Use them,” the Post reports, citing an unnamed Republican senator who recounted the exchange to a reporter.
One person died in the Capitol that day after being shot by a Capitol police officer as she and others attempted to break down the door into the House of Representatives chamber. Four other people died in the violence at the Capitol, including a police officer.
Carlson has been critical of the reaction to Jan. 6, which included a second impeachment of Trump in his final days in office and the creation of a special congressional committee to investigate the attack. The TV host used the opportunity to promote his own upcoming streaming special about the Capitol riot, which has been harshly criticized for interviewing at least one person who called the incident a “false flag” operation carried out by the U.S. government, The Hill reported.
