Trump’s family member to offer SC Gov. McMaster fundraising boost ahead of 2022

Gov. Henry McMaster will get some fundraising help from the former president’s family this month.

Donald Trump Jr. is scheduled to come to South Carolina later this month to help raise money for McMaster’s reelection, the governor’s campaign confirmed.

Mark Knoop, McMaster’s campaign manager, would not disclose any other details, but said the fundraisier is private.

The Trump family and McMaster have been political allies since before McMaster was first elected governor.

Before the GOP presidential primary in January 2016, then- Lt. Gov. McMaster became the highest-ranking elected official in the country to endorse Donald Trump.

When Trump was elected, he appointed then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in 2017 to United States ambassador to the United Nations, allowing McMaster to become governor.

Trump has returned the favor to the governor.

In 2018, ahead of a runoff, Trump campaigned with McMaster at Airport High School.

The former president earlier this year also endorsed McMaster’s reelection.

So far, McMaster has raised $3.5 million for his campaign, and does not have a major challenger on the GOP side.

State Sen. Mia McLeod, former 1st District Rep. Joe Cunningham and Democratic activist Gary Votour are vying for the Democratic nomination in next year’s election. All three trail the governor in fundraising.
