Chief of staff for SC’s Nancy Mace resigns, office says not tied to Twitter spat

South Carolina U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace’s chief of staff has resigned, days after a public social media fight between the freshman congresswoman and Georgia U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Mara Mellstrom, who also served as Mace’s campaign manager in 2020 when she defeated one-term U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham to flip South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, resigned Wednesday.

“I have worked alongside some wonderful colleagues, and have had so many opportunities to grow and develop in my career field,” Mellstrom said in a statement released by Mace’s office.“This has been the honor of my lifetime and I can’t wait to see what greatness is in store for you and for the team.”

Mace’s office denied that Mellstrom’s resignation has any connection to this week’s Twitter feud between Mace and Greene, which led to private separate meetings with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Mellstrom’s departure had been in the works for some time, Mace’s office said.

“It is categorically false to think the back and forth between Reps. Mace and Greene played any part in Mara’s departure,” Daniel Hanlon, who will be promoted to Mace’s chief of staff on Jan. 1, said in an emailed statement. “Congresswoman Mace thanks her for two incredible years of service.”
