Biden Cabinet member to speak with veterans at historically Black college in Columbia

Provided by Benedict College

A member of the Biden administration will be in Columbia Thursday to speak at a historically Black college.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will visit Benedict College and meet with a group of veterans, active-duty military personnel and VA benefit recipients at noon in the student lounge of the David H. Swinton Campus Center.

McDonough was named the head of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by President Joe Biden last year, tasked with overseeing health care and other benefits for veterans of America’s armed forces. He previously served as a deputy national security adviser and White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama.

It’s the most recent visit by a Biden administration official to South Carolina. The president himself delivered the December commencement address at another historically Black university, Orangeburg’s S.C. State, at House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn’s invitation.

Biden has credited his February 2020 victory in South Carolina’s Democratic primary, powered in part by his support among the state’s African American voters, with helping him secure the party’s presidential nomination and ultimately sending him to the White House.
