Whether doctors in South Carolina should be allowed to prescribe marijuana for medical purposes is being debated by lawmakers this year.

A bill to join the 37 other states to legalize medical marijuana passed the Senate in February and has been sent the House for consideration.

Doctors would only be able to prescribe marijuana for debilitating medical conditions such as cancer, epilepsy or other neurological diseases or disorders or terminal illnesses, among other things. It can only be in certain forms such as patches, creams, oils and edibles. The raw form used for smoking would not be allowed in the state. Only limited amounts would be allowed.

The Senate passed the bill in a 28-15 vote. The bill is sitting in the Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee. And Gov. Henry McMaster has not said publicly whether he would support the bill.

Some say the legislation could lead to recreational use, another move that would require legislative approval and unlikely in the near future because of Republican opposition.

Tell us how you feel about whether to legalize medical marijuana in South Carolina in our poll below.

Thanks for voting!
