Flags at South Carolina state buildings are flying at half-staff Monday for a Midlands police officer who died while on duty.

Newberry Police Lt. Michael Charles Wood, Jr. died Wednesday when his unmarked police patrol car collided with a tractor trailer.

Wood was responding to a call when the collision occurred, according to WLTX.

Wood, who was 48, had been with the Newberry Police Department since 2003, according to his obituary.

Flags at the State House and all other state buildings will fly at half-staff until sunset Monday, under an order from Gov. Henry McMaster, “in honor of (Wood’s) selfless service, remarkable bravery and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.”

McMaster requested other governmental entities do the same.

A service for Wood was scheduled for Monday in Newberry.
