Former President Trump apparently shot at during rally. South Carolina officials react
South Carolina officials are sharing their sympathies on social media for former President Donald Trump after he was apparently shot at during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, the Associated Press reported Saturday. The incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.
“The risks and forces President Trump is willing to face to serve his country are unbounded,” Gov. Henry McMaster wrote. “He is the face of America’s strength today. Peggy and I join millions of others praying for his safety and security and that of his family and our country.”
“Thank God President Trump seems to be okay,” Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsay Graham wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Just another reminder of the times in which we live. We need to pray fervently for anyone who may have been injured at the rally.”
“Prayers for President Donald J. Trump and the safety of those at today’s Trump rally,” U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from Goose Creek, wrote on X, quoting a Bible verse.
“My thoughts and prayers are with President Trump right now,” U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, a Lexington County Republican, wrote. “Violence is never acceptable.”
“The events that unfolded in Pennsylvania today are horrific,” U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, a Columbia Democrat, wrote. “There is no room for violence of any kind in this country.”
“Keep President Trump in prayer for a quick recovery and ongoing protection,” wrote Drew McKissick, chair of the South Carolina Republican Party. “This was a heinous act, and our civic process deserves better. America deserves better.”
“President Trump is in our thoughts and prayers,” wrote South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson. “This cowardly action today is a very dark moment. We are at a crossroads in America and must do better.”
“My President is a badass!” U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, a Myrtle Beach Republican, wrote on X. “Praying for his health and safety right now and all the people at the rally!”
“An America-first patriot. A fighter for America. Pray for #Trump!” U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, a Republican from Anderson, wrote.
“President Trump has my prayers and support,” wrote U.S. Rep. William Timmons, a Greenville Republican. “The American dream is on life support because of Joe Biden’s handlers’ terrible policies. Trump is the only person that can bring the American dream back to life. We need him now more than ever.
“Praying for a true patriot and praying for America,” wrote U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, a Rock Hill Republican.
“Praying for President Trump. Violence in any form has no place in our politics,” wrote South Carolina Speaker of the House and state Rep. Murrell Smith, R-Sumter. “This act is an assault on all of us and cannot be tolerated.”
Trump’s former opponents for the 2024 presidential nomination, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and Republican U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, also sent messages.
“This should horrify every freedom loving American. Violence against presidential candidates must never be normalized,” Haley wrote. “We are lifting up Donald Trump, the entire Trump family, and all in attendance in prayer.”
“Praying for President Trump and everyone at the rally in Pennsylvania,” Scott wrote. “May God watch over them all.”
Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, ahead of the 2024 Republican National Convention when “bangs” erupted from the crowd. He was seen reaching towards his neck with blood on his face, the AP reported.
The former president was quickly escorted off stage. The Secret Service has confirmed the former president is safe.
