SC director who oversees state Medicaid program is retiring this year. What we know
South Carolina’s Health and Human Services Director Robert Kerr is retiring from the job ending his second term as the state’s HHS leader Nov. 1.
In 2021, Kerr was named to the role, which includes overseeing the state’s Medicaid program.
“Director Robby Kerr is truly a remarkable leader and a dedicated public servant, whose counsel and vision have been relied upon and trusted by governors, legislators and colleagues alike,” Gov. Henry McMaster said in a statement. “He has transformed and modernized our state’s Medicaid program and has led efforts to improve service, efficiency, and health outcomes at agencies across state government.
Kerr previously served as director of the state agency from 2003 to 2007 during Gov. Mark Sanford’s administration and worked for the HHS for 22 years prior to this latest stint.
“I am convinced this agency has the best workforce in the state,” Kerr wrote in his resignation letter. “I am equally confident that they are poised to handle the challenges necessary to move us forward and achieve greater things.”
McMaster will make further announcements about the leadership of the agency in the near future, the governor’s office said. Kerr’s replacement will need to be confirmed by the state Senate.
