South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, the featured guest at a June fundraiser for N.C. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, said a recent report from CNN raised “some eyebrows” but he doesn’t know what’s true.

Robinson, who is running for governor, denies the comments attributed to him made on a porn website message board that CNN recently reported.

“I haven’t read but just a little bit of them, I mean I think that they cause some, raise some eyebrows,” McMaster said. “But on the other hand, it’s easy to destroy somebody’s reputation these days, I don’t know what’s true and what’s not true, I like to give everybody the benefit of the doubt. But apparently it’s caused some trouble in his campaign.”

Robinson’s campaign recently lost some top staffers and some of its campaign advertising funding is ending, according to media reports.

McMaster also offered an explanation for this week’s Republican Governor’s Association action at a press conference Tuesday. The governor’s group confirmed its ads in North Carolina would expire, and that it did not plan to renew funding.

McMaster, who is on the group’s executive committee, said they had spent a lot of money for Robinson’s campaign.

“That doesn’t mean that were not hoping Republicans will go vote for him, but the RGA reached the limits of what they could spend and decided to not spend more on that race,” McMaster said.

The Republican Governor’s Association communications director told media Tuesday that it does not comment on internal strategy or spending decisions in confirming the N.C. ads ending. “RGA remains committed to electing Republican Governors all across the country,” its communications director Courtney Alexander said.

The fundraiser McMaster attended in June was at a steakhouse in Charlotte.

“I don’t think I’ll be going back to North Carolina, they haven’t asked me to come, I have been there before, but I’ve campaigned for a lot of Republicans and will continue to do that but I think that there are others that may need help as well,” McMaster said Tuesday about the fundraising event.
