Over 300 SC National Guard members are going back to Washington, D.C. Why?
Over 300 members of the South Carolina National Guard will return to Washington, D.C., Gov. Henry McMaster wrote on social media Wednesday evening.
The trip was previously scheduled, according to McMaster’s post. Two West Virginia National Guard members were shot, one fatally, in Washington, the same day of McMaster’s announcement.
“We are a nation created and sustained by God fearing — law abiding people,” McMaster wrote on social media. “Lawlessness will not stand.”
The South Carolina National Guard will replace members from Georgia, according to the social media post.
McMaster approved sending South Carolina National Guard members to the nation’s capitol in August to support Trump’s plan to crack down on crime. In August, 200 S.C. National Guard members had been authorized.
The soldiers patrolled popular areas of Washington, D.C. and assisted law enforcement for several weeks in August and September, according to a news release from the South Carolina National Guard.
There are nearly 2,200 National Guard members in Washington, D.C. for Trump’s “restoring law and order” executive order, according to the Associated Press. After the deadly shooting Wednesday, federal defense official Pete Hegseth ordered 500 additional troops to the capitol at Trump’s request.
