SC Sen. Scott to seek reelection in ‘28, after he planned last run to be in ‘22
U.S. Sen. Tim Scott plans to seek reelection in 2028, switching course on a plan that this current term would be his last.
In 2019, Scott told the Post and Courier that his 2022 run would be his last for the U.S. Senate. After being reelected, Scott ran for president in the 2024 cycle. His presidential campaign lasted about six months.
Scott’s latest plans were first reported by the Post and Courier and confirmed to The State by a spokesman.
Scott’s role in the U.S. Senate has grown in recent years. He is chairman of the National Republican Senate Committee and is leading efforts to maintain a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.
Scott is the only Black Republican in the U.S. Senate. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate by South Carolina’s then-Gov. Nikki Haley in late 2012. He won a special election in 2014, and won his first full term in 2016.
