SC tax filers get more time to send state returns. Here’s the new deadline

With questions pending on whether South Carolina will adopt the One Big Beautiful Bill Act tax deductions, the South Carolina Department of Revenue is giving filers more time to submit their state returns.

The tax filing deadline for state returns is now Oct. 15. Those who anticipated needing more time won’t have to file for an extension.

However, those needing more time to submit their returns and expect to owe taxes, still have to pay by the April 15 deadline.

“This extension applies only to the deadline to file your return, not to pay what you owe. You will owe penalties if you do not pay at least 90% of your 2025 tax liability by April 15, 2026,” the agency said in a news release.

A bill for the state to conform with federal tax code including the deductions in the One Big Beautiful bill is pending in the state Senate. It has passed the House.

“If passed, the SCDOR will provide additional information as soon as possible, including guidance for taxpayers who have already filed their 2025 Individual Income Tax returns,” SC DOR said in the news release.
