Charleston to host 2020 Democratic presidential debate days before SC primary
The 10th Democratic presidential debate will take place at Charleston’s Gaillard Center just days before South Carolina’s 2020 Democratic presidential primary on Feb. 29, the Democratic National Committee announced on Thursday.
CBS and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute will co-host the debate on Feb. 25. Twitter and the South Carolina Democratic Party will be debate partners, the DNC said.
Aside from airing live on television, the Feb. 25 debate also will be livestreamed on digital and social media platforms.
The debate’s moderators and the qualifications for the candidates to make the debate stage will be announced at a later date.
“We’re extremely excited,” said Trav Robertson, chairman of the S.C. Democratic Party. “Any time we can get all of the presidential candidates in one place, it gives us an opportunity to showcase South Carolina and the Democratic Party.”
This month, 14 Democratic presidential hopefuls filed the official paperwork to get on the state’s Democratic primary ballot. Presidential candidate and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg did not, instead deciding to focus his campaign on states that hold Super Tuesday elections.
On Thursday, the DNC also announced debates for the other early voting states:
▪ Jan. 14: The seventh debate will be held at Drake University Des Moines Iowa, hosted by CNN, in partnership with the The Des Moines Register.
▪ Feb. 7: The eighth debate will be held at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, hosted by ABC, in partnership with WMUR and Apple New.
▪ Feb. 19: The ninth debate will be held in Las Vegas, hosted by NBC News and MSNBC, in partnership with The Nevada Independent.
Each of the state’s Democratic parties will partner on the debates, the DNC said.
