Bernie Sanders to attend King Day at the Dome event in Columbia, campaign says

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will attend the NAACP’s King Day at the S.C. State House Dome for the second year in a row, his campaign told The State Monday.

Sanders is the first 2020 presidential hopeful to confirm he will be attending the Jan. 20 rally and march. Last year, he and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker both spoke at the event.

King Day at the Dome is an annual event in Columbia celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. The event, held on the steps of the State House on what is usually a chilly morning, has become a common stop for presidential contenders. They included 2008 candidates Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, and 2016 hopefuls Clinton, Sanders and former-Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Last year, Sanders called President Donald Trump a “racist” during his address in front of the State House.

“Instead of bringing us together as Americans, he has purposely and aggressively attempted to divide us up,” Sanders said.

This year, the day’s events will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a prayer service, followed by a march from Zion Baptist Church ending at the State House where the speaker program will kick off at 10:15 a.m.
