Biden to return to South Carolina as votes are tallied in New Hampshire primary

As votes in New Hampshire’s Democratic presidential primary are tallied late Tuesday night, 2020 presidential hopeful and former Vice President Joe Biden will be launching his campaign’s full court press in South Carolina.

Biden will be joined Tuesday evening by his wife, Jill Biden, and by U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-Louisiana, for a launch party in Columbia, according to a statement from his campaign.

South Carolina represents an important stronghold for the Biden campaign, one that he seems to be investing in more heavily as the results from early voting states come out.

Caucus counts from Iowa, which major news outlets have reported are full of errors, showed Biden in fourth, and polling in New Hampshire ahead of the primary showed him struggling with Granite State voters. In more recent polls, Biden was overtaken by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in Nevada.

Biden has consistently maintained a large lead in South Carolina, with several polls giving him a double digit lead in the Palmetto State. But the most recent poll, conducted by Zogby Analytics, shows Sanders and billionaire businessman Tom Steyer closing in on the former vice president.

Instead of addressing his New Hampshire supporters directly after the primary votes are tallied Tuesday night, Biden will speak to them via livestream, according to the campaign

“I have enjoyed traveling across New Hampshire, speaking to countless Granite Staters who understand we are in a battle for the soul of this nation and I have relished fighting for each and every one of their votes” Biden said, according to the statement. “I am looking forward to traveling to South Carolina this evening and Nevada later this week to carry our campaign forward and hear from the diverse voters whose voices must be heard in this process to select the Democratic nominee who will unite this country to defeat Donald Trump.”
