Democrat Moe Brown releases first TV ads in SC 5th District race against Ralph Norman
Democratic challenger Moe Brown has released his first television ads against Republican U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman in the 5th District congressional race.
The ads will play across the local market ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention.
The two 30-second ads, titled “It Starts With You” and “Jobs and the Economy,” are part of a “significant buy” in the Charlotte market that will air this week during the Democratic National Convention, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a release from Brown’s campaign said.
The ads focus primarily on Brown’s plan for the 5th District and do not mention Norman. In one ad, Brown, a former University of South Carolina Gamecocks wide receiver, flaunts his six-year career at the state Commerce Department under then-Gov. Nikki Haley.
“I know what it takes to build prosperous communities,” Brown said in the ad. “It starts with vision, planning and execution. A stronger economy is the solution to our current challenges.”
The release of the ads “reflects the growingly competitive race in South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District,” the release said.
Norman, R-Rock Hill, has held the seat since 2017, following a special election after Mick Mulvaney became President Donald Trump’s budget director. Norman also won the 2018 election against Democratic challenger Archie Parnell.
The ads will run a few days before Republicans descend on Charlotte next week for the party’s nomination convention. More than 300 delegates will renominate President Donald Trump at the Charlotte Convention Center during the four-day event, Aug. 21 to Aug. 24.
The convention originally was set to be in Charlotte Aug. 24 to Aug. 27, but the final three days were temporarily shifted to Jacksonville, Florida, after North Carolina leaders refused to waive coronavirus-related crowd limitations.
Brown, from Fort Mill, announced his candidacy in March at a kick-off event and went on to win the Democratic nomination against challenger Sidney Moore, a former York County Council member, during the statewide primary in June.
