Lexington’s local elections turned up a few surprises and upsets on Tuesday.

Newcomer Hunter Sox, the legislative initiatives coordinator at the S.C. Institute of Medicine and Public Health, won in Cayce City Council District 3, defeating incumbent Ann Bailey-Robinson. Sox won 53% of the vote to Bailey-Robinson’s 18%, with Kelly Wuest winning 28%.

Elsewhere in Cayce, Councilman Tim James won re-election over Karen Dawkins with 73% of the vote in District 1.

In West Columbia, incumbent Mike Green held on to beat Pete Fisher in City Council District 1, with 66% of the vote. Casey Jordan Hallman held a 3-to-1 lead over Joe Fitzgerald, who had earlier withdrawn from the race but whose name was still on the ballot.

In Irmo, William Danielson and Barb Waldman were leading for two seats on the town council, defeating Jenne Bennett and Brent Chitwood. Waldman, a USC professor, will claim an open seat on the council, while Danielson wins a full term after a special election victory last year. The Irmo results were not final because some Richland County precincts were still out at 10:30 p.m.

In Lexington, all three incumbent town councilmen — Steve Baker, Todd Carnes and Ron Williams — held on to their seats, finishing far ahead of challenger Lachin Hatemi in the citywide race for three open seats.

In Chapin, Town Councilman Al Koon is an unsurprising choice for mayor. He won 95% running unopposed.

In Swansea, the new mayor will be Viola McDaniel, a retired state government employee who owns a carpet-cleaning business. McDaniel replaces Jerald Sanders, who was suspended from office after he was indicted on charges he misappropriated town funds. McDaniel won 49% of the vote to Town Councilman Michael Luongo’s 35%, Hunter Hackett’s 12% and Ray Spires’ 4%.

Linda Butler and Jerome Williams won two Swansea town council seats, defeating Thomas Dease and Suzanne Clark Hackett respectively.

But in Gilbert, incumbent Mayor Donnie Cason lost to John Reeder, who won 45 votes — or 49% — to Cason’s 22. The mayor also finished behind Fred Taylor, who won 23 votes.

In Springdale, Councilman Juston Ricard will be the next mayor, after he defeated fellow council member Viki Sox Fecas 2-to-1.

In Batesburg-Leesville, Mayor Lancer Shull won another term over Town Councilman Steve Cain by a 2-to-1 margin.

In Pine Ridge, Mayor Daniel Davis won unopposed, but there was a tighter race for town council, where Floyd Dinkins and Scott Sims both won 87 votes each. But since two seats were up at-large, both candidates still won.
